Stamping – The Definitive FAQ Guide

Stamping is a standard method for making different parts used in electronics, architecture, and other daily life equipment. Metal sheets are pressed in stamping to make a specific shape or design according to the need, resulting in the metal part used in electronics and other equipment.

1.     What Is Stamping?

Stamping is widely used to change the shape of metal sheets into parts. Stamping is also called pressing in some areas. As the name indicates, in this method, the metal is shaped into the desired form with the help of a pressing machine.

Stamping is done with the help of engineers who make the 3D models of the desired parts so that the product is precise and high quality when the stamping is done. The process of designing includes product testing and calculating every inch and angle of the product, so it is a complex process.

Some other processes are included in stamping, and these are

  • Bending
  • Punching
  • Blanking
  • Coining
  • Embossing
  • Flanging

2.     What Is the Importance of Stamping in Precision Sheet Metal Fabrication?

Precision sheet metal fabrication and stamping are used to make metal parts used in the industry. For example, it is used to make electronics, vehicles, furniture, ornaments, and everyday items.

In stamping, metal sheets are used, which are shaped into the parts by pressing. Different techniques are used in stamping to make the process smooth and the products precise.

Stamping is a time-consuming process, and the process can be automated to reduce the time consumed. Manual stamping is slower, but automatic stamping reduces the need for the labor force and it is less time-consuming making it an efficient process.

Precision sheet metal fabrication is a process that helps in making metal parts like panels, enclosures, and brackets. This process is as vital as stamping, and it can help make parts from aluminum, steel, and other alloys.

Stamping and precision sheet metal fabrication are essential to produce the components needed for making different everyday items.

3.     What Are the Uses of Stamping?

Stamping metals are used in various applications. For example, stamping is very useful where engraved writings are used; other stamping uses can be observed in lettering and 3D (3 dimensional) designing for making different products. The primary industries that include stamping are

  • Telecommunication services
  • Medical industries
  • Automotive companies
  • Defense and Military
  • Aerospace
  • Kitchen Appliances
  • Furniture Industry
  • Toys Industry
  • Cameras
  • Computers
  • Lighting industry

Everyone has stamping products in their homes because it is used in every field of life. Stamping is used to make products like springs, washers, metal clips, brackets, and weights that are detailed and precise.

You can use stamping to make significant and small-sized parts, as small as 0.002. You can make small-sized parts with the help of micro-precision stamping.

Industries use stamping because of its efficient results in home electronics, aerospace, appliances, and telecommunication industries. You can stamp metals like copper, aluminum, alloy, steel, and copper alloys.

The parts that are made include contacts, springs, terminals, and pins later used in electronic equipment, medical devices, computers, and ornament-making. Stamping uses dyes that are less costly making it a cost-effective process.

4.     Which Tool Is Used for Stamping Metals?

Stamping is a simple process, but the designing of the press is a complex process. It is also the first step in stamping that the designers create the press that suits the needs of our product. The press should be exact because the stamping process depends on it.

Dimensions, feed direction, tolerance, and scrap minimization are the goals of a designer in designing the major part of stamping. Dies and hard steel are used to efficiently cut through the rigid metal surface.

Heat treatment is also given to the metals in the process of Stamping to maintain the strength of the metal. Following heat treatment, grinding is another tool to finish the rough materials of the metal part. These tools make the product work in the equipment we are making it for.

5.     What Are the Types of Stamping?

Stamping metals have different types used according to the parts we make. Stamping has other methods, but mostly, stamping is done at room temperature.

Stamping helps make components used in telecommunication, electronics, consumer goods, food and beverage, aviation, automotive manufacturing, and many more. Further types of stamping procedures that help in differentiating the parts are

Piercing

Piercing carves holes in the metals with the help of high-quality carbon steel. In piercing, the metal sheet on the workbench is pierced or punched with the pressing tool. The process can be repeated multiple times according to the product’s design. Mainly, piercing is done for door hooks and door hinges.

Blanking

In stamping, blanking is the type where we use the pierced metal. This type of stamping is used for making small and medium-sized metal parts. Blanking is mostly the first part of the stamping process, followed by deburring and finishing the metal for the desired shape.

Drawing

Drawing is the process of adding depth to the metal by deep pressure so that the design can be seen. When the press machine presses the metal, the exerted force puts shape onto the metal part. There are mainly two types of drawing.

  • Shallow drawing has a radius that is equal to the draw depth making it shallow and therefore, called shallow drawing.
  • Deep drawing is used to make deep-depth products. There may be different shapes, but to understand this, a deep drawing is as deep as a cup, it needs more force to do this kind of stamping.

Figure 4 Deep Drawing

Coining

In the coining, a metal part is used in the stamping to paste with the stamping press. It is done to make the shape of a coin, and therefore, the process is called coining. The metal coins produced are highly tolerant. Coining is known to change the shape of the metal permanently.

Lancing

No metal piece is removed in lancing, but the press and dye slit the metal. It makes unique shapes like hooks, vents, and openings.

Embossing

Embossing in stamping creates raised surfaces on metals to make the embossing die set, or a machine can be used. Embossing can make complex designs, and metals like steel and aluminum can create embossing in stamping metals. Car hoods, engine housings, door frames, steel plates, and metal coverings are some of the examples.

6.     What Is the Difference between Stamping and Precision Sheet Metal Fabrication?

Stamping and precision sheet metal fabrication are both processes that manufacturers use to make metal parts that are further used in making electronics and everyday items. Both methods are highly recommended and widely used to make machinery.

Stamping is done using a pressing table that stamps the design onto the metal sheet, whereas, in precision sheet metal fabrication, the parts made are complex and high quality with great precision. Precision sheet metal and stamping use different techniques to make the best metal parts.

Figure 5 What Is Metal Stamping?

7.     What Is the Main Principle of a Stamping Machine?

The main principle of the stamping machine is using force by pressing the table to change the shape of the metal sheet. The process is straightforward: take the metal sheet and dye it, then put tons of force on it by pressing the weight and shaping the metal into the part you choose.

You can press more and make a deep stamp like a cup or a shallow stamp by pressing with a not-very-deep press that helps make the stamp in the metal sheet. You can use stamping to create metal parts repeatedly keeping the quality in check.

8.     What Are the Steps in the Stamping Process?

Stamping is a simple process, but making a specific part may have more than two steps. The steps vary depending on the part of metal you are trying to make, and these are

  1. Blanking is the first step. In this step, large metal sheets are cut into smaller or more desired sizes according to the size of the metal part we are making.
  2. Piercing is another step of stamping, which is done to make holes in the metal sheets. If there are no holes in the metal part, piercing is unnecessary.
  3. Drawing is used to draw the design with the help of a press. The press exerts a force on the metal sheet and the design results.
  4. Bending, as the name indicates, involves bending the metal sheet to match the shape of the metal part we are making.
  5. Air-bending is the step that makes a flat metal surface bent into a die, creating a V-shape.
  6. Coining or Bottoming is the exertion of too much pressure to change the shape of metal permanently.
  7. Forming is another step for bending the metal sheet, like coining and bending.
  8. Pinch trimming is the step in which the metal part is separated from the scrap metal; in this step, metal is pinched against a flat surface.
  9. Lancing is a unique step. Lancing is responsible for cutting and bending the metal sheet to make parts like hooks.

9.     What Are the Metals Used in Stamping?

The metals that are primarily used in stamping are the ones that are used in high quantities by the industrialists making equipment used in everyday life. The metals are

  • Aluminum
  • Carbon steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Brass
  • Copper
  • Copper alloys
